Asus RT-AX88U Review – Next-Gen WiFi 6 Dual-Band Wi-Fi Router

Today we’re gonna find out if Wi-Fi 6 real is worth it and spoiler alert it is friggin worth it gets Wi-Fi 6 now and the article.

Now we’re not going to article there but I’m gonna show you some stuff in this article you’re not gonna believe I couldn’t believe Wi-Fi 6 is real let’s get into it.

Now first I actually got this Wi-Fi 6 router. I’ll tell you the one I’ve upgraded to and I think it’s the best Wi-Fi 6 router or it’s one of the best wifi 6 routers.

But this is the first one I got and I just got this Wi-Fi 6 router because I wanted to find out he’s worth wifi 6 real and I got the transfer speeds that I wanted with Wi-Fi 6 and I got yet I’m getting wifi 6 or one invest in one so.

Wow, so what did I invest in boom this is the one I think it’s the best well it’s the best for me there’s another one they have two that I was considering that I have already reviewed and that’ll be the ROG Rapture GT-AX1100.

What is it now GT-AX11000 I got the RT-AX88U now take the difference between those in a minute but when it comes to Wi-Fi 6 what is Wi-Fi 6 so obviously it’s Wi-Fi 8x and it’s better than Wi-Fi 5 router?

If you don’t have a Wi-Fi 6 wireless router you’re not getting the full potential out of those things.

And we’re talking Extra battery life 80% better range, 4X greater network capacity and efficiency, 7X battery life for client devices.

And yes I have actually noticed even if I have a Wi-Fi 5 connected tour I do get better battery life I noticed that with my XPS 15 that it does get better battery life.

When I’m transferring a lot of files streaming a lot of stuff the only thing I can put the battery life games down to is Wi-Fi 6 so wifi 6 is real.

And before I get into demonstrating how awesome it is and how much of a game-changer it has been. I want to first show you the Wi-Fi router I got.

Now I was actually talking to a network guru from whirlpool no-no whirlpool is dead like they started off as sort of like a network or internet sort of website.

But they’ve in tune with their discussion forums like you know sort of like Reddit or something they the network gurus okay.

And that guy from there told me actually he told me to get this you guys just get these do the best thing it’s like a twin pack of Wi-Fi 6 Reuters or routers.

And you put one at the front of the house and you put one at the back of your house and wolf. you get you to know the full speed at the front and back house but the choice I made is all with this.

Because I know with these because I’d reviewed the GT-AX11000 I know that even at the back of my house I pretty much get full speed with the Internet.

Transfer speeds a little bit different but the Internet yes. so I don’t need that twin pack and using mesh Wi-Fi oh by the way this AX 88U supports Wi-Fi mention.

The choices I had were between these two and I’ll tell you boy is used to the best in a set.

When I was comparing these to the only two differences were well one has 8 Antennas one is 4 they’re both 4/4 antennas.

So they’re no different near but the Asus GT-AX11000 is Tri-Band so it has two 5 gigahertz networks and one 2.4GHz.

Whereas the Asus RT-AX88u is Dual-band so has one 5 gigahertz and one 2.4 GHz same processor same 256 megabytes flash and one gig ram.

Pretty much looks exactly the same other than those extra antennas and that extra 5 gigahertz network.

There is one other difference if we go to the port the ROG Router has a 2.5 gigabit per second port that’s maybe good.

If you’ve got a 10 gig sort of internet infrastructure and you’ve got more than one client hitting their Wi-Fi router at once but I can do that with link aggregation.

Asus RT-AX88U AX6000 Review: Ports

Anyway will virtually get 2.5 gigs to at least but the AX88U has 8-gigabit ports vs the four that you get in the ROG model.

So for me, it made sense to get the RT-AX88U you can’t go wrong with either but if you need 2.5 gigs or the network or you need the extra 5 gigahertz network yeah all right.

Get the ROG model now the RT-AX88U comes with of course Wi-Fi 6 next-generation Wi-Fi 6 6000 megabits per second sort of total bandwidth there.

I’m going to show you the real-world speeds in a sec four antennas and it’s four by four eight LAN ports, of course, you can plug USB into it and have a network drive use Wi-Fi mesh.

And you’ve also got Internet protection inside it is about a full feature that you get.

So it’s pretty much got everything you want in a Wi-Fi 6 router and why I think Asus is the best and the network guru from whirlpool said the same thing when it comes to the user interface.

Asus RT-AX88U AX6000 Review: User Interface

The interfaces inside the router no one comes close and you’ll notice if you use Asus motherboards vs other motherboards when you’re building pcs.

Is this bios is a hundred times better than everyone else and for networking is like 200 times better like it doesn’t even come close to all those other ones their user interface is a joke.

I’m not gonna show you too much inside here but you get guest networks you can get traffic to analyze the quality of service.

You get a gain boost of WTF where you can route your gaming traffic through premium fast servers to get the lowest ping possible.

Of course, you can set this up as a VPN you can access your network and even your network drive from outside any country in the world if you want.

It just has the most features best features and you can even get Merlin firmware which even gives you more features again nothing compares to Asus with this and they always keep it up to date.

Now this one doesn’t actually have WPA3 yet that’s coming already now in the beta firmware WPA3 is coming to this as well.

So many features in here I could just make an article just on that and if you want to see an article just me going through every single thing.

They’re just the best Wi-Fi routers in my opinion on the market.

I bought this with my own money and by the way as Asus actually contacted me and asked me.

If I wanted to review this and I said hey he bought it. you don’t need to send me one and that’s because I reviewed that I wrote G1 and I know this one you know gives me everything I want.

So you know they’re the best Wi-Fi routers in my opinion so if you were gonna go Wi-Fi 6 this is the way to go.

Asus RT-AX88U Review: Speed Test

Now let’s get into some real-world tests I could not believe this ok have a look at those transfer speeds can you believe it.

Yes, we’re getting 90 megabytes per second and even over a hundred megabytes per second, and just to give you a reference with that Wi-Fi 5.

I could get anywhere from 52 to say 62 megabytes per second depending on the laptop may be sort of a max of 65, 68 megabytes per second.

Wired Gigabit Ethernet maximum of brand 112 and usually, it’s between 100 and 112 megabytes per second.

You were looking at Wi-Fi 6 so this is done on a laptop with Wi-Fi 6 and we’re getting 92 over 100 megabytes per second transfer speeds virtually the same has been wired via ethernet wow.

This Wi-Fi 6 router even boosted the speed of Wi-Fi 5 by around 5 to 10 megabytes per second.

So I could get nearly 70 megabytes per second just using Wi-Fi 5 on this Wi-Fi 6 router then I decided ok let me see if I can edit off my nest now I’ve never been able to edit off – for your Wi-Fi ever.

You’re watching here playing back 4k footage off – via Wi-Fi 6 wolf can you believe that this surprised me.

Because I’m only getting 100 megabytes per second transfer speed but it must be the latency of wifi 6 that allows this because you try that with Wi-Fi 5 you press the spacebar I have a cup of tea before it starts playing.

It’s really that bad and that’s just because of the latency so Wi-Fi 6 is real and I could not believe it was even increasing the speed of my wifi 5 clients.

So I’m blown away with Wi-Fi 6 I’m blown away that at the back of my house I’ll get full internet speed 100 megabits per second down and 40 up transfer speeds are not 100 megabytes per second out here they’re still respectable with over 60.

So basically the full speed of Wi-Fi 5 next to the router I’m getting at the back of my house now and I connected my phones at Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 at the back of my house.

So we have quarter-acre blocks in India and I’m talking my Wi-Fi routers at the front house I’m at the back yard at the fence so far away and I’ve got full speeds and even though it does say their mix or multi-connection.

I can assure you I turned off mobile data and that was pure Wi-Fi speeds at the back of my house with 5 gigahertz.

So that was in the 5 gigahertz Network usually in the backyard I can’t connect the 5 gigahertz at all usually you’d have to go to 2.4Ghz but this is giving me this range with 5 gigahertz that I was getting with 2.4 before.

So this is an amazing router Wi-Fi sticks are real do yourself a favor if you’ve got a new laptop and a new phone that you have Wi-Fi 6.

Get yourself a Wi-Fi 6 router and this is the one to get in my opinion unless you want to go to that next model up you know when the network guru tells me has this the best.

The Tp-link Archer AX11000 insane-looking, tribe and Wi-Fi 6 capable gaming router.

I purchased it as an upgrade to my home Wi-Fi network because I wanted something that was serious and could do a multitude of different things.

This is an unboxing article are we talking to you about weak in the box, how this beast sets up and why I wanted to purchase it, and how it has performed so far during use.

Now I’ve had a problem with my home Wi-Fi network because I basically just been using the standard Router that my internet service provider offers and that isn’t all that fancy.

It’s pretty basic as you’d expect and I wanted something that I could use a quality of service system on the base.

It allows me to customize what items in the house get bandwidth and that’s something that this Router offers as you can see.

It’s a gaming-focused router so with a click of a button within the software and there’s an app on your phone and also you can just access cloud-based service on your web browser.

You can prioritize gaming over everything else so even if you have a multitude of loved Wi-Fi devices in the house or device connected to it, it will prioritize gaming on those devices.

So whichever devices are on the network that is gaming, for example, I have a couple of switches in the house and a PC that is prioritized.

And you can also do it on a device-by-device basis as well I’ll show you that a bit later on which is pretty cool.

The other reasons I wanted it is.

I wanted something that could offer better Wi-Fi coverage because again the standard router is pretty enough.

And this one as you saw right at the beginning of this article comes with some serious-looking antennas also has a number of other things including and includes 8 Ethernet ports that you can connect up to.

And it has a CPU inside 1.8 gigahertz quad-core CPU so it does a lot of processing, it’s got a lot of power in it.

It is an expensive bit of kit and a chunky beast so expect some pretty smart intelligence from it.

And some powerful performance and so far been pretty impressed with it certainly in terms of Wi-Fi coverage.

There were some dead spots in my house or some spots with very low coverage at the opposite end of my house and upstairs and in certain rooms where the walls are a bit thicker between where the water is in that room.

And this has made all that different suddenly devices that weren’t getting any signal or getting full signal now.

So in terms of Wi-Fi coverage alone this route – as a worthwhile purchase much stronger connection now.

I have around 20 to 25 different devices in the house there’s a lot of different things to think about but these antennas that you can see here very chunky interesting.

They basically just connect and I’ll show you that in a minute and they connect around the edge of the router.

And it’s really easy to install them – they basically just click into place and you don’t they don’t need to be bent in two different directions to point the signal in different areas.

They just do the job of pushing the Wi-Fi around your home and it uses a range boost technology with beamforming to ensure you get the best signal coverage.

As well and obviously there’s a lot of intelligence within this router that allows it to manage the Wi-Fi network.

And you can see also just how many Ethernet ports you get on there that you can plug into so what I’m doing is I’m using my Internet Service Providers modem Router.

Basically lets the broadband come into the house and have an Ethernet cable that goes from the back into this and I also used cat 7 cables.

Because I was using a cat 5 cable so I upgraded from my original cat 5e cable I think up to cat 7 so that’s faster cables as well and connected that directly up to my PC.

So my main gaming rig is Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi to give a solar connection and then obviously I’m improving the Wi-Fi over everything else in the house too.

I do a separate article on how to easily swap this if you do this upgrade or something similar to it perhaps a cheaper model.

The Archer AX6000 for example also has a very good reputation is a bit cheaper than this one and that basically allows you to easily swap networks.

But just keeping the same network name and password and basically moving over.

So that’s something I did with this as well basically allowed me to move like 24 different devices that have lost track.

There might be more than that, oh some powered off and the setup is dead simple.

Basically taking out of the box plugin all the different antennas connect it up to your modem with cables that included in the box powering off both first before you start going in and turning it on and then going into the software obviously disabling Wi-Fi on the standard router.

And then you’re away basically and it’s connecting up everything else and I immediately noticed speed improvements and a couple of speed tests although obviously the speed you’re getting isn’t necessarily going to improve the coverage is and the Wi-Fi speed might slightly are especially around the house.

I found there was an improvement and noticeable improvement not just in the speed test that I did but just in the use case.

But the main reason I wanted to do it was the software which I’ll show you later on which allows that for the control and prioritization of certain devices.

And therefore making sure that if I’m gaming no one else can interfere with it by watching Netflix or by doing a zoom call somewhere else in the house.

And there’s a lot of that sort of thing going on in the environment this thing is a beast though so I’ve kind of hidden it out of sight on top of a cupboard where my wifi won’t complain about sick she does like to complain about that random thing.

They’ll bring into the house now as I said this is a Wi-Fi 6 router as well as kind of future proof it’s got a lot of forward-facing technology in its 802.11ax tank basically allows for faster connectivity is also able to handle a lot more in terms of Wi-Fi devices.

And it is a very interesting machine I did a lot of research to purchase this one let’s make sure I was getting the best and a good experience.

I have found that it delivers a much better experience than this time that routes it but that hasn’t really surprised me because any upgrade that you get over your standard internet service providers one it’s gonna offer a better experience also have a multitude of Ethernet cable connections that I’m probably not going to use.

I only basically have a Phillips your hub and then my main gaming machine although sometimes I plug in a laptop during testing purposes as well on the box.

You also see there’s a WPS button a freezer connection you can also turn the Wi-Fi off we just depress and you have USB 3.0 and USB C connectivity on the side.

As well you can update the firmware through the software so there’s no need to worry about plugging it into your PC.

Basically, a really user-friendly and simple system once it’s installed dead easy to control from your phone or from a browser.

And it’s really nice to very simple setup process and a fantastic bit of kit the other good thing is that if anyone complains that they’re not getting enough Wi-Fi for some reason.

You can just go into this software and change that one thing I did.

I actually had two CAT severed cables so I used one of the spare ones in place of the stand when they included cuz that was CAT 6e.

I think so it wasn’t actually as fancy, I happen to have two cats so in cables he starts prices you could see how easy is because the guide that they send with is so simple as basically just two pages.

TP-Link Archer AX11000 Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Router Review: Speed Test

It basically tells you about turning off the modem plugs into the router downloading the app set up and away you go one of the first things I did was I ran speed tested as a speed test beforehand on the left-hand side and afterward when installing a new router on the right.

And you’ll be able to see immediately there’s a difference in the speed of Susie’s done I over Wi-Fi on my phone so it shows you that coverage difference in terms of the speed.

There’s gang but that’s gonna vary depending on what’s coming through the line at the time and within the app that you can now see on the right side.

There’s an app called tether you can run a speed test with ease and this is run through speedtest.net still so users still use that technology.

And you can run it over and over regularly and you get a history of the speeds that you’ve got through there and it will tell you what you should be able to do according to your current download and upload speed.

As well now there’s also a browser-based system well it gives you access to a lot more controls in there you can see how many Wi-Fi clients you have on there so there’s 31 is showing on their home island which is pretty nuts doesn’t even realize it’s 31 obviously, that varies depending on whether they’re turned on and off.

So I had 24 that I was messing with earlier on I generally, I was actually going up to 30.

Here you can also see the MAC address of each device and you can edit and change the name of them so you know what’s what and see whether they’re connected to the 2.4 gigahertz the 5 gigahertz network or eath that and that’s another thing to note is that this has three different essentially you can connect different devices to offering different speeds and you can then prioritize those.

You can do it our a time basis you could set it for a few hours or you could set it to always prioritize that device in my gaming machines also my work machine.

So it’s pretty important that’s prioritized in terms of network, you can also get a game accelerator and there are loads of other things within here you can see WPS. port forwarding, parental controls, firewall system, and all sorts of other things fantastic machine really useful in a number of different ways and it’s great to be able to customize it in so many different ways – one thing I will know is.

I have noticed if you prioritize too many different devices you find that the other devices on our networks suffer a little bit this might vary depending on how much speed you have at how much speed is coming through the line at the time.

But generally, the devices that I prioritized I’ve experienced a much better experience without too much of a negative effect on the others apart from my wifi mowing occasionally all in all well worth the money really enjoying it so far.

So in this review, we will do a Wi-Fi speed coverage and some performance tests so please sit back relax and enjoy the review.

Moving on to Wireless settings here you can set up wireless settings for all three bands.

Either you can combine them in a single SSID or keep them separate here you can also set up WPS WDS wireless, mac filter radius settings, and more.

You can also set up a guest network set up local LAN settings.

Then under WAN settings, you can set up internet connection settings, dual-band settings, port triggers, virtual server port forwarding DMZ D DNS, and NAT settings.

Then under USB application settings you have a lot more options to choose from and configure USB Attached devices the network share, storage, and more.

Followed by that you have AiCloud two settings it allows you to connect your data wherever and whenever you have an internet connection and links your home network and online storage.

Asus rog rapture also supports Alex and IFTTT devices their options for ipv6, firewall, administration settings, system logs, and some network tools.

But you don’t have to set up all these settings if you’re not a power user you can leave everything to default or you can use the Asus app to complete the whole process quite fast.

ASUS GT-AX11000 Reviews: Performance coverage

Now let’s do some performance coverage and speed tests so we placed Asus GT-AX 11000 Wi-Fi 6 are in the basement storage room.

It has concrete walls around it and it is in the lowest part of the house for this test we are using Intel’s ax200 Wi-Fi 6 card installed in our laptop.

So the total square foot is of the house is 5000 square feet I will be testing Wi-Fi connections in different corners and floors of the house to see how well the Asus WiFi 6 router performs in terms of Wi-Fi speed and coverage.

In this test, we will use fast.com which is powered by Netflix to perform the internet speed test and also used IPerf3 performance tests, so let’s get started.

Okay so here as you can see on the screen we have three WiFi bands all set up separately 2.4 GHz band is called Batman, the 5GHz-1 band is called Superman and the 5GHz-2 band is called when a woman.

Both 5d guard channels are set 260 MHz bandwidth with DFS channels few things I want to mention here at 160 MHz channel on the 5GHz-2 band does not work under Auto channel configuration ut it works fine.

For a 5.0GHz-1 band, in order to make a 5.0GHz-2 band work with 160MHz.

You have to select the 160MHz channel bandwidth option manually and select the control channel to any of the available channels to range from 100 to 128.

For this test, I have 128 channels selected so this is very critical because I spent hours and hours to figure this out.

And I hope Asus will fix this problem in the future firmware update and for reference, I’m using a form where 3.0.0.4.384_7979.

I have 1 gig Verison Bios connection and for the 1st test I have connected the 2019 MacBook Pro to the router by Ethernet cable and we are getting close to 1 gig internet speed conforming router can handle 1 gig internet speed as advertised.

The MacBook Pro has also been configured as I three server we will use our Intel AX200 Wi-Fi 6 laptop as a high power 3 client to perform Wi-Fi coverage and speed test.

If you’re not familiar with IPerf here’s quick information.

IPerf3 is a tool for active measurement of the maximum achievable bandwidth on IP networks.

ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Review: speed tests

So for the 1st Wi-Fi speed test, I’m standing 5feet away from the Wi-Fi 6 router and as you can see on the screen we have full 2.4 gigabits per second Wi-Fi connection and the Wi-Fi 6 card on the laptop is set to 802 2.11ex standards.

We’re going to use the fast.com internet speed test which is powered by Netflix and as you can see on the screen we are able to get 600 Mbps Wireless speed and standing at the same spot.

let’s test the IPerf3 speed test as well here as you can see on the screen we are getting good type of speed results.

Now for the 2nd test, I’m standing 30 feet away from the Wi-Fi 6 router in the basement with a couple of walls between the Wi-Fi router and the laptop.

I have so far a good Wi-Fi connection and using the fast.com internet speed test we are still getting 570 Mbps wireless speed.

And for IPerf 3rd tests we are getting 368 Mbps Wireless speed now let’s move from the basement to the main floor of the house and to a 3rd wifi speed and connection test.

I have so far a good Wi-Fi connection and using fast.com internet speed test we are still getting 590 Mbps wireless speed and for IPerf three tests, we are getting 323 Mbps Wireless speed

Now I moved to the far left side of the house and close to 60 feet from the Wi-Fi 6 router with the floor and few walls in between the Router and Laptop.

I have so far a good Wi-Fi connection and using the internet speed test we are still getting 390 Mbps wireless speed and for IPerf three tests we are getting 191 Mbps Wireless speed.

Now let’s move to the far right side of the house and close to 30 feet from the Wi-Fi 6 router with the floor and few walls in between the router and laptop.

Here we have good Wi-Fi signals and good Wi-Fi connections and using the internet speed test we’re still getting 570 Mbps wireless speed and for IPerf three tests, we are getting 324 Mbps Wireless speed.

Now let’s move to the 2nd floor of the house where we have two floors and few walls between the Wi-Fi 6 router and laptop.

Here we still have good Wi-Fi signal strength and I have so far a good Wi-Fi connection and using the internet speed test we are still getting 550 Mbps wireless speed.

And for the eye power 3 tests, we are getting an average of 345 Mbps wireless speed.

Now we are going to do a Wi-Fi 6 file transfer speed test in this test we have Intel AX200 WiFi 6 network card install on our desktop.

It is close to 15 feet away from the Wi-Fi 6 router in the 1st test we have connected to a 5GHz-1 channel named Superman.

We are connected at full 2.4 Gbps speed you can see the channel settings on the router page on the left and on the right-hand side.

We have set up a Wi-Fi 6 card 802.11ax mode only so it will only connect to Wi-Fi 6 band.

Now we are going to transfer close to 6GB files over Wi-Fi let’s run the test in the test.

We are getting an average of 113 Mbps transfer speed which is basically a full one network card speed on the NASS.

Now for the 2nd test, we are going to connect you 5.0 GHz to a band called wonder woman.

We are connected at full 2.4 Gbps speed let’s transfer the same 6 GB file again we have the same average of 113 Mbps transfer speed.

So full 1 gig transfer speed again now we are going to switch the wifi s6 card settings to 802.11ac standard and do the same 6 GB file transfer test.

Now you can see we are still getting the full 1 gig transfer speed of the network card on the NASS.

Now we are going to switch the wifi 6 card settings to the 2.4 GHz channel and do the final 6 GB wireless speed test.

Now you can see we are still getting good transfer speed.

ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Router Review: Final Overview

Overall Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Wi-Fi 6 Router did perform very well in this review the AX11000 Wi-Fi 6 router delivers good Wi-Fi coverage excellent Wi-Fi speeds and will not have a problem covering 5000 square feet.

Asus has definitely listened to the customers and fixed the forum where issues of 5Ghz to with 160 megahertz bandwidth and it also improved Wi-Fi speed as well on that basis.

When it comes to scopes, the Nighthawk AX8’s unique design is what makes the scope so good.

The router has four head antennas on its wings and they are pre-optimized for the best possible performance.

To give you an example, I have a little over 2,500 square feet in my house here.

And I usually use a mesh Wi-Fi system, which basically consists of multiple nodes, multiple routers scattered throughout the house to avoid any kind of dead spots.

My expectation of restarting a router was that the dead spots would return and connectivity would be unpredictable in certain areas of the house.

But no! Not with the AX8. A router and I can have fast and consistent Wi-Fi access wherever I go in my home.

The AX8 is an absolute beast when it comes to specs, but it’s also important to have great software on the router.

This router works with the Nighthawk app, which allows you to monitor connected devices, quickly change settings, and even configure parental controls.

How to Configure Netgear Nighthawk AX8 (RAX80) WiFi 6 Gaming Router from Smartphone step by step setup guide using Nighthawk app?

Go to your device’s App Store and download the Nighthawk Wi-Fi app.

Once downloaded open it up and after reading the terms and conditions and choosing your location services preferences you can create your Netgear account as well as turn on biometric login such as face ID and connect the app to your router.

Once the connection is made we’ll need to update the password the administration of the router this isn’t the Wi-Fi password as a password to enable you to change the settings of your router once you have done this you’re nearly there after a quick firmware update you’ll see the settings available on your app.

Now there are times when you want to connect your devices. I have a lot of wired devices in my house.

In fact, I retrofitted my house about a year ago to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet speeds indoors.

My internet connection was two gigabits up and down and internally we have 10 gigabits available. So on my home network, I have about 105 devices connected to the internet.

Not all of them are wifi. I’d say about half is connected to the home network. And the Netgear AX8 has excellent support for wired devices, too.

Now the cool thing here is that you can actually add in ports and combine them to double the speed on your home network.

You can also add ports for your internet connection, so if you have multi-gig speeds like me. Again, 2-gigabit internet speed is coming to my house.

In fact, I can add one to 2-gigabit ports to allow my multi-gigabit internet connection to be supported directly on the router.

So we’ve established that the Netgear Nighthawk AX8 is a strong and powerful router but let’s talk about WiFi 6 for a moment and what it brings to the table.

Netgear Nighthawk AX8 8-Stream (RAX80) Review: Benefits of WiFi 6

Firstly, WiFi 6 is significantly faster than the previous generation WiFi. We talked earlier about including WiFi 6 in this router which will keep things fast and you will see the difference.

Then the congestion of WiFi 6 will be less. Due to changes in the way data is transmitted, WiFi 6 can handle more simultaneous connections more efficiently, meaning it can handle more devices without suffocating.

And lastly, WiFi 6 can improve battery life as well. As long as you use a Cisco WiFi-compatible device, you’ll notice longer battery life when connected to a WiFi 6 router.

Since data is transmitted faster and further, your device doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the connection and that means better battery life.

Now WiFi 6 was the only thing I’d say I couldn’t really test because I literally only have a few devices that support WiFi 6 and they’re all versions of the same device.

That device is Samsung Galaxy S10e, Samsung galaxy s10, and Samsung Galaxy s10 Plus.

These are the only devices that ship here in the US right now that I can get my hands on that they support WiFi 6.

But even when comparing speeds when I was on the older router, with the newer Netgear AX8, you can see a big difference in speed.

With its WiFi 6 functionality, extended range, helpful apps, voice control, VPN support, and antenna design, the Netgear Nighthawk AX8 is a solid choice if you’re looking to bring the next generation router into your home.

Netgear Nighthawk AX12 (RAX120) WiFi 6 Router AX6000 – Reviews

Today we’re unboxing and setting up a wi-fi router so this particular one’s from Netgear and this is the nighthawk AX12.

So let’s take a quick look around the packaging this comes in a large box picture of the router here.

Features

Maximum network capacity for wi-fi devices 5 gigabits per second ethernet port for faster-wired connectivity.

Looking at the side here four times better performance than an ac router with more wi-fi for more devices up to Eight simultaneous wi-fi streams maximize range.

So it says actually has 8 antennas built into it to give coverage indoors and out AX optimized powerful processors 64-bit 2.2 gigahertz quad-core processor, multi-gig ethernet port.

Smart Connect intelligently selects the fastest wi-fi band for every device one wi-fi name for the entire home.

Nighthawk app easily sets up your router and gets more out of your wi-fi. AX wi-fi supports all current wi-fi devices and voice-controlled by Amazon Alexa and Google assistants that should be an interesting one to try out.

Shows a rear view of the router and an interesting point to highlight link aggregation ability to aggregate, 2 gigabit LAN ports for faster file transfers not seen that available on other routers.

So it should be an interesting one to test out as well so let’s open it up and see what you get in the packaging.

Unboxing

Okay, so you know the routine I’ve laid out everything you get in the packaging so let me quickly go for the items one by one.

In terms of documentation, you get all this with there so details on updating the firmware safety and software update information together with a quick start guide which is multi-language.

You get an ethernet cable flat cable style to this 1.8 meters in length and build quality is good on this.

you get a power adapter the output is 19 volts 3.16 amps and it’s a big chunky adapter here cable length on this is 1.6 meters build quality of the cable seems okay.

And it’s a dc connector on there you get two adapters with this and one’s for EU, the UK the other one’s for India and it’s just a matter of taking it and sliding it into position there you go, and if you want to take it out again press the button and pull it up.

Would it be nice if the power adapter was smaller I think this is just nuts having it this big and hanging off a plug like this?

And finally, the wi-fi router so quite a large size to this so in terms of dimensions just to give you an idea 22 centimeters 29 centimeters across there 24 and a half at the bottom there and wingspan.

So this is a bit of a futuristic effect it looks like a spaceship you could say and the wingspan coming down there we’re talking 17 centimeters so pretty large.

And you can see the plastic protecting it so let’s peel that off so there we have it opened up and you can see there nighthawk you can see a fan over here and a grill for ventilation purposes.

Two buttons over here coming around the side if you wanted to close the side bits up you’d have to lift it up.

You can see four wires exposed there so that’s four for the aerial on this side and four on the other side so eight aerials in total.

And just to show slots into place if you push like that is a little bit flimsy not something you’d really be touching often same on the other side.

Coming around the back you can see some vents on here two holes for wall mounting and four rubber pads on there. coming in close you can see some of the details on there.

Ports

Looking at the back you’ve got an On-Off button for the LEDs so that’s quite nice if you didn’t want it flashing away you can turn them off then you’ve got four ports only two can be aggregated together to get a combined port.

Internet port here and this is where you plug in a cable going from your existing internet router plug it in there then you’ve got a Multi-gig port here Reset point. Two USB ports and a Power button and DC connection port.

Design

General build quality is fine strong plastic all the way around just keep in mind the flaps at the side I think in terms of looks it looks pretty cool futuristic ufo sort of style to it.

Setting up device

let’s make a start at setting up this device so I’ve got the dc power connected and the internet connections going to my existing router.

Now coming over to my mobile, if I click on the play store the app we’re after if I search for Netgear is Netgear nighthawk so I’ve already got installed.

If I click open agree to the terms and conditions needs access to location services so we’ll allow that allow only while using the app.

Login or create a Netgear account to get started let’s click get started and now let me set up my account in the background.

I’ve entered in my credentials let me click login two-step verification never ask me again you can set that up if you want but I don’t need it for now.

Asking me if I want to save my password to google smart lock I’ll say never to that for now. touch id maybe later with that do you want to install a new Netgear product yes to that get started, wi-fi router.

Next, we need to scan in the Qr code that was on the plastic just over here so let me do that now to allow access to the camera.

Unplug your internet modem remove your and insert any backup batteries plug your modem back in and wait for it to power on next to that next is saying connect the cable from your router to the nighthawk.

I’ve already done that so Next to that and let’s power on the device there you go it’s successfully connected personalize your settings let’s personalize your network settings next to that.

So this is the SSID of the router and the password for it just click Next to that. next, it’s asking me to update the admin password on the device let me enter in a new password Next to that.

Touch id I’ll say Maybe later, security questions Next to this firmware update required so let’s Update that now update successful Next to that it’s connecting to the router now.

Says it’s up and running let’s click next extended warranty and support I’ll click Maybe later and there we have it up and running so let me briefly show you around the options on here so you can see the internet online.

Then you’ve got device manager you can see the device is connected to this if I click got it thanks. there you can see my phone connected on there coming back from their security and there we have it.

So you can see here armor expires on the 23rd of September and it’s a page four service if I click on there. you can see the cost of it here so it seems to be a yearly subscription and it’s 44.99.

Coming back to internet speed if I click on that we can do a test speed test has completed and the download speed is 74 meg and the upload is 19 meg.

So this is the speed I’m getting directly from my service provider and I’m pretty close to the router anyway so no surprise there in terms of performance.

By clicking on history you can see a history of the speed test that we run back from here wi-fi analytics.

Let’s click on that scanning time one second and it’s showing the signal strength on here. so it’s going to be good I’m literally right next to it.

Coming across there you can do a test in different locations see the other wi-fi networks nearby coming across their channel interference so it’s showing which is the best channel for this.

Channel graph it shows the different wi-fi channels coming across again signal graph there and that’s it so back from here.

Wi-Fi settings if I come in there got a smart connect and here you can see the two bands available both are under the same name so 2.4 gigahertz and 5 gigahertz and coming in each one you can actually rename it.

So if you wanted distinct names for the different bands you could do that if you didn’t do that then it would just try to connect to the closest one or the one that’s stronger so coming back from there.

And if I turn on smart connect then you won’t have those options to rename these so now coming back from here.

Guest wi-fi so you can’t turn on a guest wi-fi as well at the moment it’s not enabled but it can be enabled here for both 2.4 gigahertz and 5 gigahertz coming back from there.

Traffic meter so you can enable that you can monitor your traffic going in terms of uploads and downloads back from there.

And you’ve got support now coming over here your bell icon if I click on there just tells you armor is active and the protection level on there coming back from here.

And that’s all the options you have available you’ve seen for yourself in terms of setup it’s very easy to set up.

Signal strength performance

Next, let’s test out signal strength performance so you can see at the moment it’s showing amazing because I’m right next to it literally.

But if I walk away now and what I’m going to do I’m going to walk to the back of my garden and if you look at the distance there we’re probably saying about 80 feet from this distance here.

Where I’m at the top so if I now start walking away you just keep an eye on that signal strength meter. so I’m one floor down now and now it’s going to okay, so I go two floors down.

If I now walk out of the house, it’s dropped now, it’s still showing okay, there you go still showing okay, so in between not good and okay if I look up.

That’s where the router is coming down there you go so that’s pretty good now looking at the wi-fi on my phone now you can see there’s literally just one bar there now coming over to youtube got a video here now if I play it.

And let’s check the quality on here it’s at 4k maximize that and let’s see how it does at this distance there you go one bar and performance is pretty good.

And if I now point out just to show I’m still around the same location right at the back so approximately 90 to 100 feet I guess away from the router and there you go 4k youtube video being streamed and no issues at all with it.

I can see no buffering no lag on there just runs smoothly along, let’s perform a speed test from the back of the garden to see what the performance is like on the internet.

So if I click to go on here there you go performance-wise download is 72.4 megabits per second and upload is 18.5 megabits per second so still very similar so you’re not really losing hardly anything with this.

File transfer speed test

Next just to show the router in action with a local NAS server so I’ve got my Synology now server just over here it’s plugged in directly into the router.

Now coming over to my android phone I’ve mapped to drive to the NAS server and there’s a share on there called team geek street if I go in there we’ve got an mp4 file that is 5.27 gig in size so if I copy that.

And now we go to the local storage on my phone and now if we hit paste there you go super fast transfer rate you can see for yourself 38 megabits per second.

And it’s saying time remaining two minutes so that’s pretty quick let’s see it complete. there you go that’s copied across just over two minutes to copy that across.

Now I’m back in my garden let’s try the same test again so if I copy the video here and we paste it locally onto my mobile there you go so getting about 12 megabits per second so it’s saying six minutes to complete.

There you go copied across we’ve got about 17 to 18 megabits per second transfer rate so you can see the difference still transferring at a reasonable speed.

What I’ve now done for the next test I’ve connected to my Netgear ORBI and I’ve disconnected the two satellite speakers so the mesh network’s no longer valid.

So the main router is in the same location and you can see now there’s barely a signal in this same location and now coming back and in youtube.

If I try to do a search it doesn’t even get a signal here so you can see for yourself how strong the signal is coming from the nighthawk.

As a comparison let me perform the same test of copying a file from the NAS server but this time via my Netgear ORBI which I’m currently using.

So if I drop this down just to show I’m connected to the ORBI there now if I select the file click copy and go to my local storage on my phone and I click paste so performance is good locally as well.

So you’ve got to be pretty close to the device to get this sort of performance on there but you can see for yourself even on the ORBI it’s good.

There you go the copy is completed performance is good only because literally I’m quite close to the router here.

Router Highlights

Now just to note you’ve seen for yourself performance at a distance with the nighthawk is much more superior with the Eight antennas.

Obviously, the range is much further we can stream easily 4k content from youtube transfer files as well easily whereas on the ORBI there was a limitation in range.

Now the device has two interesting options the first one being aggregate. so link aggregation is where you can aggregate two ethernet ports together to provide fault tolerance.

So if one port fails or one network card in your server for example fails you’ve got the other one to fail back on the other one is the fact you can aggregate the links.

So you have the increased bandwidth using both ports so throughput using that method will be much faster and that’s configured by the web interface on the device.

The next one is the multi-gig ethernet port now that’s an interesting port to have on here only because you can use it as a standard port so you can just plug in your laptop and use it directly off there.

And it actually supports multiple speeds so 100 megabits per second one gigabit per second 2.5 gigabits per second and 5 gigabits per second.

Now the reason for this port is if you had devices like a network switch or a NAS server that had connectivity higher than one gigabit this will allow you to connect it up to the device and make better use of performance from the device so you get better throughput from there.

Nothing, in addition, to configure for this you literally just plug in, and away you go a little bit different from a standard router the fact you have that sort of option available and it’s nice to put that on there.

The next thing worth showing is the led light you can see the lights on on the device at the moment and now if I turn them off you can see all the lights have turned off except for the power indicator there.

Now looking at the top of the router there you’ve got two buttons so if I zoom in button at the top here is your WPS button and the button below there is just to enable you to turn the wi-fi on and off.

So if I hold on to it for two seconds there you go it will turn off indicating the wi-fi is completely shut down and if I hold on to it now for about two seconds let go of that comes back on again it’s a nice bit of functionality you can just have a cut switch just turn off your wi-fi quite easily.

Google home mini setup

Next, let me show how to get voice control functionality working with google home so I’ve got my google home mini set up over here.

If I go to the nighthawk app first, click on the home icon settings anywhere access so you just need to enable that first of all.

Next, we need to link in our Netgear account with the google device so if I initiate voice control on my android device talks to Netgear. Google home voice – “before you can use Netgear I need to link your Netgear account to google“ yes do that.

There you go we’ve got a dialog up here so let me enter in my details now let me click sign in and we need to click allow to allow access. Google home voice – “great your Netgear account is now linked to google“.

Google home voice – “let’s get Netgear the Netgear app helps you configure your Netgear router or ORBI wi-fi system here are some things you can ask for“ “turn on the guest network” “turn off the guest network” “reboot the router“ “what are my wi-fi settings?” “what is my guest network password” to close the session say “close” what would you like me to do?“.

So there you go it’s Linked it now and you can see the different options you have available on here, so if I unmute my google device Google home voice – “The microphone is back on“.

I can say OkGoogle turn on the guest network, (Google home voice – “okay, for that you might want to talk to Netgear, want to give them a try“) YES.

(Google home voice –“here’s Netgear I will enable the guest network Netgear guest and email you the guest wifi credentials, do you want to proceed“) YES.

(Google home voice – “Okay I will enable your guest network“) okay, so I’ve received an email and it says your guest network is enabled a wi-fi network is Netgear guest your wi-fi network does not have a password.

Let’s test out some other commands so you can say OkGoogle ask Netgear what are my wi-fi settings.

(Google home voice – “I will send you an email with your wi-fi settings“). Ask Netgear OkGoogle what is my guest network password, (Google home voice – “your guest network does not have a password“).

There you go some cool functionality available here via voice control and again the way it’s working is working off your own voice so it identifies with your voice and then it does the action involved if you had another person trying it won’t work.

So the only thing to note is if the other person had a similar voice to yourself then they’ll be able to do this but again if it’s sending details over to an email then obviously it’s going to go to your email.

Amazon Alexa voice control device setup

Let me show the same functionality on the amazon voice control device it’s coming over to my android phone so the thing to note is obviously remote access is enabled and the same applies for the amazon device.

So if I go to the amazon app here go to more skills and games and we search for Netgear.

There’s a skill there if I enable that for use next, I need to enter in my credentials so let me do that click sign in allowing access here and there you go it’s successfully linked now.

So now if I unmute my device I can say Alexa tell Netgear to turn on guest wi-fi. (Alexa voice – “I will enable the guest network Netgear guest and send the network credentials to the Alexa app, do you want to proceed“) YES.

(Alexa voice – “okay, I will enable the guest network“) there you go as simple as that to get configured on the amazon device.

So commands wisely the same applies for both devices and an interesting bit of functionality not seen on other routers out there can be useful.

Obviously, you had guests over you just want to enable it for a little while you can just say the command out rather than messing around with the app and once they’re gone you can just disable it again there you go an excellent bit of functionality here.

Okay, so you’ve seen the unboxing and setup of this Netgear nighthawk AX12 wi-fi 6 router very simple to set up and configure I use the android app to get this set up just a few steps and you’re ready to go with this.

Performance-wise very impressive was curious what it was like to have a wi-fi six router and I don’t think it fails to disappoint.

Signal strength-wise it’s pretty impressive the fact you’ve got 8 antennas the four on each side.

The range is pretty good as well so I was at about 90 to 100 feet away from this and I was getting one bar and even with that I was getting good performance.

I was able to easily stream a 4k video from youtube without any sort of buffering or lag on there I’ve compared it with my Netgear ORBI which I’m currently using and you saw for yourself performance is much better.

An interesting bit of functionality on this one the fact it has the multi-gig Ethernet LAN port and the fact you’ve got the ability to aggregate two of the ports together to provide additional throughput between two devices.

Local performance with the router is really good but you have to keep in mind that the performance you have with your service provider your internet service provider is quite key here.

So as long as you’ve got high bandwidth there, so high download rates, and high upload rates it’s going to be pretty good.

If you didn’t and you had a lot of people on your wi-fi network it’s going to suffer and you’re not really going to gain anything by getting this other than a better range on this.

If you had a local NAS server and you were looking for improved wi-fi performance speeds then this is an ideal solution for that obviously with the faster technology here you’ll get better transfer rates locally.
